Holiday Mode + Zoo Pictures

Holidays are finally here!
I’ve had a reasonably restful week so far and spent some time playing Zoo Tycoon 2 again, taking a few new photos and doing a little bit of work on my novel. On Wednesday I had my car serviced and yesterday I went to Ikea and Harbour Town where I managed to find a few bargains. I also went out to dinner last night with my family, which was nice.
The trip to the Zoo was fantastic. It wasn’t too busy and we spent a good part of the day there. The Adelaide Zoo are getting Pandas next year, so they have closed off an area that they will be making into the new exhibit. It meant that I didn’t get to see some of my favourites (zebra, scimitar horned oryx, bongo)  which have now moved to Monarto Zoo but the visit to the giraffes more than made [...]

Oregon frogs going home

Tagged Under :

This is a story we hope to see more and  more often in the years ahead: herpetologists and zoos releasing threatened amphibian species back into the wild. Full story here. Excerpt below:
PORTLAND - As eggs, they were rescued from the perils that have all but decimated their population. As tadpoles, they hatched under the watchful eyes of zookeepers. Now they have begun developing their land legs, taking the final step toward a release back into the wild, where conservationists hope they will have a fighting chance.
Around 290 endangered Oregon spotted frogs are being head-started into young adulthood at the Oregon Zoo in an attempt to save a species imperiled by loss of habitat, invasive predators and the deadly chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), which has quickly spread from Africa to threaten amphibian populations worldwide.

And in case you’re curious, here are some photos of the best features of our new place–please excuse the mess, we’re moving! There’s also an office, balcony, and bedroom that I didn’t show in these photos because the pictures didn’t come out well.

San Diego: Happy Birthday Zhen Zhen (1) und Su Lin (3)

Tagged Under :

Happy Birthday

Bear Attack Week: The Bear Lethality Index

Tagged Under :

Many arguments erupt over which bears are “best.” One can only assume that “best” means “deadliest” or “most lethal” when talking about bears. What other criteria could be used to determine which bear is best? Exactly - none.
I will traverse the vast many species of bears to discover which bear is indeed the best bear of them all.
Koala Bear - This bear ranks extremely low in lethality, due to the fact that it is neither a bear nor lethal.
Panda Bear - Panda bears are probably “capable” of killing people, but are they capable of killing other bears? The deadliest bears are. The panda is barely worth mentioning, if not for that time a zoo panda in China that mauled a teen when he jumped into “gentle Gu Gu’s” pen. What’s worse than getting attacked by a bear? Surviving and having to tell your friends it was a panda named Gu [...]

Zoology

The zoo…..  A depiction of society… its clusters, circles, brackets….  The carnivores… the herbivores… omnivores.  We spent the day at the zoo, staring through thick glass and steel wire…. glaring at beautiful and exotic animals in unnatural settings.  Caged…..  emasculated…. controlled… scared… anxious…. uncertain…. Comparatively undeniable…..
The kids viewed the animals with fascination… Belle strutted back and forth while the flamboyant ostrich chased her… The silverback gorilla leaned his back against the glass, ignoring us…  the king of the jungle locked eyes with Baker….

The kids haven’t recognized it yet, but I couldn’t resist the social overlay… sitting poolside at the community swimming hole….  The cool spot on the Serengeti…. To the right of the entrance, the carnivores… the lioness and her pride….  Adjacent and nearer to the shade, the familial troupe of primates… In the farthest corner, enjoying full sun… the gazelles.. elusively grazing with complete view of predators…. The scavengers, perched strategically, awaited to prey [...]

Baby wanna bottle?

Product: 7-Up
Date: 1950
It’s 1950. It’s Middle America. Here we have Mom (in her high heels and pearls), Dad, Freddie, Kay, and little brother on a swell outing to the zoo. Look at the polar bears! Look at the balloons!
Now let’s turn our attention to little brother, the cute baby in the stroller. How old is he? Eighteen months? Maybe two, tops? He’s having a good time at the zoo, as well. What’s that he’s drinking? A bottle of nourishing mama’s milk? A cup of apple juice?
No, sir! It’s cheerful, clean-tasting 7-Up. Just because you’re still in diapers doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your very own glass bottle of fizzy sugar water. In fact, it’s good for you. It’s practically medicine. The ad says so.

Seven-Up is so pure — so good — so completely wholesome that even the very youngest can “fresh up” just as often as they want…and with [...]

The zoo-oo-oo

Today, I went to the zoo (well a safari park actually).
Apart from silly people blocking a three lane road to stare at a sleeping lion for 15 minutes. It was all good. The car was threatening to overheat, so the heating had to be on, it was ridiculously sunny, and we had to have the windows up incase we got mauled. I was threatening to overheat too.. It was all good though. Even if the phone pictures aren’t.

Other things I did today… Errr not alot. I got my NI? Did I write that already? I can get a job and go places once I sort out ID. Another eurgh.
Tonight I’m home alone, which is why I’m on the computer abnormally late. I’m spending my nice romantic time, alone. Sigh. Sat in here, cause I’m kinda scared of the big dark empty house. Computer seems safer…
