And it happened in Florida.
Scads of false reports have also complicated Safari Wild’s effort to capture the monkeys, Wehrmann said. Patas monkeys grow to about 10 pounds and are the fastest runners of any primate, reaching speeds of nearly 35 mph.
“People don’t know what they are,” said Wehrmann, a St. Petersburg veterinarian. “People think they are squirrels.”
Clark can vouch for their quickness and spooky nature. He’s never seen one closer than 100 yards. The slightest disturbance sends them bolting for safety.
He reported the monkey sightings to the fish and wildlife officers after going through several hundred pounds of corn in his deer feeders during the past few months.
“I don’t think they believed me,” Clark said. “No interest at all.”
So Clark installed game cameras near the deer feeders that are triggered by motion detectors. Hunters and wildlife aficionados use them to capture images of rare species.
It wasn’t long before he had [...]

Today I had the opportunity to observe the howler humans very closely. They are called howler humans because they are as loud and vocal as the howler monkeys. You mainly see them climbing around buildings and fixing up houses. They tend to be very primitive and scream at innocent humans of the opposite sex. Acting like this is not something that is very popular with regular humans, but they are a needed species and definite proof that we are related to the chimpanzee as the howler humans, as stated earlier, act very primitive.
Actually I’m just joking. Kind of. As far as I know, there is nothing called a howler human; but the behaviour is true when it comes to stereotypes.
What inspired me to write this is based on what I saw this morning on my way to work.
There were this young woman walking a few meters ahead of me. Further [...]

Nearly half of all primate species face extinction. Some are being literally being eaten into distinction.
Edouard of “Sustainable Develop and Much More…” blog sent me a link to an article Nearly half of primates are in danger of becoming extinct, highlighting this problem. The two major reasons why primate populations are being threatened: habitat loss through logging and hunting for bushmeat and the illegal wildlife trade.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN):
Overall, 303 of the 634 species and sub-species - 48% - are listed in the most threatened categories: vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered.
Africa - 63 species or subspecies are in the top three categories (37% of African primates). Eleven of thirteen kinds of red colobus monkey are critically endangered or endangered. Two - Bouvier’s red colobus and Miss Waldron’s red colobus - may already be extinct.
Asia - 120 species or sub-species are threatened (71%). In Vietnam and Cambodia, 90% are considered [...]

I’m not too happy…
Monday started well - had to shoot home to pickup a few things, and found that my landlord (Luminus Group) had contracted in some firm (BSG Property Services) to replace my leaking gutter (about time too - I’d only been complaining about it for about 5 years - but I digress).
Had to go back home about lunchtime and was sitting at my desk eating some lunch when there was a knock on the door - one of the BSG monkeys stood there looking sheepish (can monkeys actually do that?). Shuffling his feet, he (sheepishly?) asked if my phone line was ok - I checked - it was dead :| , no phone, no internet, no TV.
He apologised and said he’d been onto his office and they were arranging for a BT engineer to come out ASAP and get it sorted. No problem thought I, I’ll be back [...]

GMA in Beijing
President Arroyo will attend the opening of the Beijing Olympics on Friday, August 8. On Thursday, she will fete Filipino athletes with a dinner at the Asia Hotel Beijing. GMA is hopeful that the country could finally win its first Olympic gold medal ever particularly in one of her favorite sports, archery… something that’s highly improbable unless of course she volunteers herself as the target.
Air Quality
DENR’s Environment Management Bureau (EMB) reported that air quality in the country has improved by 33 percent. The EMB attributed this to Malacañang and its allies in Congress “dahil sa husay nilang magtago ng baho ng gobyerno.”

Sorry for my absence in blogging, was in Honduras for 9 days on an awesome mission trip.
In the small town we were working in there was a travelling circus. They had some of those small monkeys with real long arms and long tails that were chained up and swinging on some little ropes. Unfortunately some young boys started taunting the monkeys, then one monkey grabbed a boy’s leg. The boy freaked out and fell down, some other boys then quickly pulled the boy away from the monkey and he was unharmed.
I like circus justice.
