Bird, bird, bird - bird is the word

Native to Australia, the Cassowary is one of the oddest birds around. Flightless, frugivore (feeds primarily on fruit), shy, but if provoked, then becomes the world’s most dangerous bird (so says Guinness World Records - take that 411 to your next trivia night!). The cassowary is capable of running at top speeds of 30 mph, has three dagger-like talons on each foot and is capable of jumping several feet in the air.
Sounds like a ninja disguised as a bird if you ask me - and I definitely wouldn’t want to get in one’s way.
When it comes to animals in Australia, the Koala is near the top of the list for sure. Though not endangered, the number of programs to protect koalas is very high and brings in millions of dollars. That being said, the cassowary must be the ugly cousin; not only is this animal actually endangered, but conservation funds are nowhere close.

“Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!”
The cat stands supreme amongst domesticated animals because its suavity and cool superiority denotes that it has never been entirely domesticated by man. The dog, on the other hand, represents the very antithesis of feline independence and integrity. Slobbering, fawning, dripping, defecating unashamedly, unable to feed itself without human assistance, the dog is fundamentally dependent upon its human master. One can own a dog, but one can in no meaningful sense own a cat, and there is equally a distinction between the sorts of people who strive to master these creatures. Whilst one may despair at achieving the respect of a cat, the act of owning a dog typically articulates a demand for power. The dog owner needs to parade evidence of his power in front of the whole neighbourhood, and he is therefore, in a strange sort of a way, as dependent upon his dog [...]

What a hot day at the fair. I had a nice time. My honey bought me a pretty peace sign necklace. We walked around seen the cows, pigs, goats, bunnies, and other cool animals. The pigs are my favorite. This fair is a great place to spread your ideas. Both the Democrats and Republicans had excellent booths. Me and my significant other picked up some Obama flyers. The religious had their stuff set up too. I wish there was Atheist talk show hosts at my fair. But no, the Maryland State fair had no such thing. There was the Christian Farmers, Jews for Jesus, and another Christian booth. But it seems like whoever put together this event forgot Atheist, Pagans, Muslims, and so forth live in Maryland. I sat thorough the worst thing an Atheist could possibly. Listening to what beads on a leather string mean to a preacher. He [...]

Preface for Academics
To follow Nietzsche should imply some degree of agreement in form as well as content, and yet we academics too easily submit to the MLA style rather than the FWN style, and if that is not tragic enough, we do this despite being prodded by Nietzsche to go beyond – rather than beneath – him. And so, I introduce this unconventional little paper, which nowhere looks back, which always, unflinchingly looks forward.

Introduction
In bringing the questions of “What separates us from the animals?” am I making a mockery of philosophy? Socrates mocked his listeners by differentiating humans from other animals by defining the human animal as the featherless biped, while others speak of our ability to think and use symbolic language. Yet these abilities belong to even the lowest types of human beings and cannot be easily distinguished from the thinking and [...]

The Animal Man cometh.

D is home for the weekend. First one since the beginning of August, after which he had to go back to Ontariario for his grandma’s funeral. He hasn’t had a day off since coming back from that trip, which? Sucks. Sure, the boys & I have done a couple of road trips north to see him, but it’s not the same as having his cigarette-smoking, beer-drinking, poker-playing (cute) ass here for the weekend.
An interesting side-effect of his arrival home? I have been returned to Second-Rate Human status by the animals (except for my baby Gizmo, who will always be MY cat). Yes, Animal Man! is home. And no matter how many months he’s been gone (12.5 & counting, gahhhhh) and how much I have fed and loved them, he is King Shit of the Animals.
The best thing is that the boys are spending [...]
