a queen starts a new empire

A queen ant is starting a new colony at my office. Amazing enough she decided to build it on the window outside of the Environmental Section Head’s office. She has got one worker with her, and is tending to a few larvaes.
The spot she chose is relatively safe. It’s out of harms way and gives us a good vantage point of her progress. Gives me a nice little project too. I’ll try too find out what species of ants she is.
Stay tuned…..

33 — Three Legged Dog

From S.  Last night i had a dream that my dog’s right hind leg fell off while i was taking him for a walk. He didn’t seem to notice and he wasn’t in pain. I was so horrified it looked disgusting, I ran home with the leg to show it to my friends and tried to desperately put it back on my dog. No one seemed to be concerned by it and they said that it was meant to fall off because he didnt need that leg and was happier without it. When I woke up and took him for a walk and someone walking by asked what’s wrong with your dog’s leg?…he wasn’t limping ..weird.

shinny in the morning

We had our first snow today!  Of course, it was all gone about an hour later and it has been raining since, but seeing those fat flakes when I opened the blinds this morning was pretty exciting.  That first glimpse of snow had me thinking about all of my favourite snowy activities before I remembered that I can’t actually do any of them this winter (what with the gigantic belly and all).  I especially love skating outside and really wanted to be eating a Killaloe Sunrise BeaverTail on the Rideau Canal today.
I’ve noticed that, in the States, skating is not exactly the essential life skill that it is in Canada.  Even here in Connecticut, the climate is way too mild to support the countless makeshift rinks that popped up in the parks, school yards, and backyards of my youth.  If we ever make it back to Canada, poor Doodle will [...]

or if (somebody out there loves you)

somebody out there loves you. they don’t know why they love you but they do. they don’t care that they love you they just do and they’re going to love you for a long time and they’re going to tell their children and then their grandchildren about you and how much they love you even if at that point they’ve known you for years and you’ve died or are still alive or even if they don’t even know your name or your natural hair color or if you like dancing or if you’re religious or if you can’t read or if oyu love to read or if you rinse out the sink after your brush your teeth or if you can’t have children or if you have eczema or if you’re allergic to cats or if you drink too much alcohol or if your dad is married to your mother’s sister now or if you don’t keep your underwear drawer [...]

hard-wired

The head of food purchasing at the hotel I used to work at was nicknamed “Swiss”.  I never knew his real name - everyone always called him Swiss.  He was raised in Switzerland and much to his delight when he learned we had gotten a Bernese Mountain Dog (also known as Swiss Mountain dogs) - he told me stories of the Berners he’d grown up with.  ”Smart dogs, these, smart dogs.  My dad would tell the dog which cows to bring home and the dog would bring back just those cows.”
I don’t attribute that kind of brain power to Bella.  Much has certainly been lost since she really isn’t a working dog.  However, there are things still hard-wired in her DNA that can’t be denied.  She is never happier than in this weather.  She begs to go out at any opportunity to gulp up mouth fulls of snow.  She’ll put [...]

A Visit From Santa….Already?

Roo! Roo! Rev your motor scooter!

Santa just made an early visit to our house. Can you guess what he left for us? That is for Goldie (Golden Retriever mix) and me. Two beds in red, shaped like bones! Did you get that? Shaped like a b-o-n-e, bone! Here come the visions of Milk-Bone® biscuits dancing in my head again. I wonder what Goldie will be dreaming of.

Sweet dreams,

bush/hitler

This is too little too late, I know, but here you go (thanks dissidentvoice.org):

When President Bush decided to invade Iraq, his spokesmen began comparing Saddam Hussein to Adolph Hitler, the most monstrous figure in modern history.  Everybody was therefore shocked when a high German bureaucrat turned the tables by comparing Bush himself with Hitler.  As to be expected, she (the bureaucrat) was forced to resign because of her extreme disrespect for an American president.  However, the resemblance sticks–there are too many similarities to be ignored, some of which may be listed here.

Like Hitler, President Bush was not elected by a majority, but was forced to engage in political maneuvering in order to gain office.

Like Hitler, Bush began to curtail civil liberties in response to a well-publicized disaster, in Hitler?s case the Reichstag fire, in Bush?s case the 9-11 catastrophe.

Like Hitler, Bush went on to pursue a reckless foreign policy without [...]
